2023 Terrace Talks

An intimate series of artist and publisher talks presented on the garden terrace of Paradise Plaza during Tropic Bound 2023 on Saturday, Feb 18 and Sunday, Feb 19.

Saturday, February 18

  • Description text How can dealers, collectors, and librarians work together to embrace growth, change, and risk in the acquisition of rare and distinctive materials? "Canonical books" are those which are generally considered to be sacred or sanctioned by the governing power structure of a discipline. Does the world of artists' books have its own canons? If so, what norms of power do they reinforce?

Beyond a simple plea for de-centering old canons or establishing new ones, this talk examines how a radically exploratory and collaborative approach to collections development might effectively counteract hierarchical systems of appraisal that remain embedded with legacies of bookselling, collecting, and librarianship.

Arthur Fournier (Arthur Fournier fine & rare) is an independent dealer of rare books, serials, manuscripts, and archives in all fields and genres, specializing in primary source materials related to the transformative cultural movements of the late 20th century, modern conflicts, disruptive technologies, music, performance, and the visual arts. He is a member of the Antiquarian Booksellers' Association of America and focuses his practice in the trade on serving the needs of libraries and research institutions.goes here

  • Colette Fu has been engineering complex three-dimensional compositions with her own photographs for almost two decades. Turn the pages of Fu’s stories and inspirations as she presents We Are Tiger Dragon People, her ongoing series of photo-based pop-up books about the ethnic minority groups of China.

Philadelphia-based artist Colette Fu received her MFA in Fine Art Photography from the Rochester Institute of Technology in 2003 and soon after began devising complex compositions that incorporate photography and pop-up paper engineering. Her pop-up books are included in the National Museum of Women in the Arts, Getty Research Institute, Library of Congress, Metropolitan Museum of Art, and many private and rare archive collections, including special collections at the University of Miami. Fu's numerous awards include a 2020 Joan Mitchell Artist and Sculptor's Grant, a Meggendorfer Prize for best paper-engineered artist book, and a Fulbright Research Fellowship to China. In 2017, Fu created the world's largest pop-up book utilizing her own photographs – “Tao Hua Yuan Ji, Source of the Peach Blossoms”, a 21x14 feet pop-up book that people could enter, at the Philadelphia Photo Arts Center. She teaches pop-up courses and community workshops internationally.

  • Born and raised in Miami Beach, artist and author Michele Oka Doner absorbed and delighted in the natural beauty and magic of her surroundings. This fueled her lifelong study and appreciation of the natural world from which she derives her artistic vocabulary. Both Intuitive Alphabet and A Seed Takes Root are results of her intimate relationship with this tropical paradise, now shared in print with these two exquisitely designed books by Miami’s own Tra.

Michele Oka Doner is an internationally renowned artist whose production encompasses sculpture, prints, drawings, furniture, jewelry, public art, functional objects, video, costume and set design, and artist’s books. She is well known for such permanent art installations as Flight at Reagan International Airport and A Walk on the Beach at Miami International Airport. Oka Doner’s work is found in the collections of The Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Whitney Museum of American Art, The Art Institute of Chicago, and the Victoria & Albert Museum.

  • Since 2006, Hanoi Peréz and Steven Daiber have collaborated on multiple projects including creating five book collaborations with Cuban artists and co-curated the first international artist book exhibition in Havana. During the years of 2015- 2019 they got ever so close to creating a legal artist book workshop in Havana.

With the recommendation of a Cuban lawyer, they considered divorcing their wives, swapping to remarry. This common Cuban solution was a possible path towards having the artist book workshop in Havana. Behind the scenes was the Havana Syndrome, then Trump showed up, COVID landed, Ian blew in and Kennedy’s temporary embargo grinds on.

Stanford University, Green Library-SPECIAL COLLECTIONS, Stanford, CA. Smith College Museum of Art, Smith College, Northampton MA. Library of Congress, Rare Book & Spec Collections, Jefferson Library, Washington, DC. New York Public Library, Special Collections Print Department, New York, NY. Cuban Heritage Collection, University of Miami, Richter Library, Coral Gables, Florida. University of Southern California, Special Collections, Doheny Memorial Library, LA, CA

Since 2001 Steven Daiber has had the good fortune to work in printmaking studios in Hanoi, Vietnam and Havana, Cuba. During the academic year of 2003-04 Steven and his family lived in Havana, Cuba for 10 months. In Havana he has had the opportunity to work in eight different print shops with a variety of Cuban artists. As a result, his first-hand knowledge of the United States and Cuba’s intertwined history empowers and contributes to a sense of urgency in Daiber’s work as an artist. His books and the collaborations with Cuban artists, tell stories of Cubans’ lived reality in juxtaposition to Daiber’s acute observations as an outsider contemplating the struggle of the Cuban people caught in the politics between nations. Humor, the arts and ingenuity are essential for their survival.

He has taught printmaking and books arts at San Alejandro Academy of Art and the Institute of Superior Arts (ISA) and at the Taller Experimental de la Gráfica. In 2008 and 2012 he taught book arts workshops in Hanoi at Viet Nam Fine Arts Association and the Fine Arts University.

He has an M.F.A. from Cranbrook Academy of Art in 1981 and a B.F.A. from the University of Delaware in 1978. His work is in the collections at MOMA, Cuban Heritage Collection: University of Miami, Stanford, Yale, Harvard, Smith College and the Museo National de Bellas Artes, Havana, Cuba and others.
